Presidential candidate Serhiy Taruta withdrew from the elections in favor of Yulia Tymoshenko. The parties signed a memorandum, which they announced on March 16 at a joint briefing.
Suddenly and immediately
Sergey Taruta is influential among industrialists (especially the east of Ukraine) and is not controlled by Rinat Akhmetov. From the beginning of the campaign, he was on good terms with Yulia Timrshenko, unofficially he was predicted to be the prime minister in the event of Tymoshenko’s victory.
But the decision to withdraw in favor of the YuVT was hardly originally incorporated into Taruta’s tactics: he did not declare withdrawal from the elections before March 7, therefore, remains on the ballot papers, and the voiced motivation is weak.
Arguments of Taruta:
“There is a big risk that this power will continue for another 5 years, the war will continue and economic collapse … The Basis Party will do everything so that Yulia Vladimirovna will win.”
Tymoshenko was restrained:
“Our programs coincide with 80 percent. I will not break values in partnership. Thank you for the difficult decision”.
Secret more obvious
The ratings of Sergei Taruta as a presidential candidate are unlikely to significantly improve the position of Yulia Tymoshenko. The only reason for the alliance is the withdrawal of Yevgeny Murayev in favor of Alexander Vilkul and, thus, a substantial strengthening of Rinat Akhmetov’s position. Being in soft opposition to Akhmetov, Taruta, in fact, came under the banner of Tymoshenko, at least, to maintain his position. On the crest of a propaganda break, when — for the first time in Ukrainian history! — The US Embassy takes an active part in our elections, such strengthening Akhmetov is dangerous. After all, the States respect strength and poorly understand the mood of society, it is easier for them to deal with a successful businessman who guarantees their interests, and not with a bunch of public organizations (as it was at EuroMaydan).
Of course, the Tymoshenko received bonuses: its sympathizers in the east and south of Ukraine will increase significantly. Tymoshenko does not have a goal to win at the expense of votes from these regions, her goal is to squeeze the maximum votes in these regions from Rinat Akhmetov, who, according to some other oligarchs, upset the balance of power.
